How to Create Better AI Image Prompts
Move beyond generic adjectives. Learn how using specific cinematography terms, optical lens focal lengths, and lighting setups dramatically improves image generation.
Avoid Fluff Words
Early prompt guides encouraged adding vague booster words like "photorealistic, ultra detailed, award winning, masterpiece, trending on ArtStation". Modern diffusion models (like Midjourney v6, SDXL, and Flux) treat these as noise that dilutes your prompt's semantic weight.
Instead of saying "detailed photograph", specify the photographic medium: "shot on 35mm Kodachrome film" or "85mm portrait lens, f/1.4 aperture, shallow depth of field".
Specific Photographic Dimensions
- Lighting Type: Instead of "good lighting", use "volumetric morning god rays", "soft diffused north-facing window light", or "dramatic rim light with high contrast shadows".
- Camera Vantage: Specify camera angle: "low-angle heroic perspective", "overhead flat lay", or "eye-level candid street photography".
- Color Palette & Grading: Direct the mood with color grading terms: "warm amber and teal palette" or "desaturated monochrome with sharp highlights".
